If you're working with a Vi-PEC iSeries ECU and the calibration file is locked, you might have already noticed something: Vi-PEC and Link ECU are basically the same platform. Same company, same PCLink software, same file formats. Vi-PEC was the original brand before Link ECU took over as the main product line.
Why does this matter? Because it means if you're locked out of a Vi-PEC file, the same recovery process that works on Link ECUs works on yours too.
Vi-PEC and Link — The Connection
Vi-PEC iSeries ECUs (the i44, i88, V44, V88, and the plug-in variants) all use PCLink as their tuning software — the exact same application that Link G4, G4+, and G4X units use. The calibration files are .pcl or .pclr depending on the model, and the password protection works the same way.
When a tuner locks a Vi-PEC calibration file, PCLink encrypts it using XXTEA — a block cipher that's not trivially breakable. You can't just open the file in a hex editor and find the password. It needs to be properly recovered from the encrypted data.
What Typically Happens
Vi-PEC ECUs have been around for a while now, which actually makes the locked file problem worse in some ways. A lot of these units went into builds 8 or 10 years ago. The tuner who set it up might have moved on, retired, changed careers. The shop might not even exist anymore.
And because Vi-PEC is the older branding, some people don't even know what to search for. They Google "Link ECU password recovery" and find solutions for G4+ and G4X, but aren't sure if those apply to their i88.
They do. Same platform, same files, same recovery.
